An Historic Moment as Rosenior Breaks Boundaries

"He is a top tactician that knows the game back to front, which is the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first black player, it would be dishonest to claim this moment does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a multi-club ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show a mere 12 black managers – not including individuals holding interim roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When kids see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that champions what's right… it is profound and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is a huge step for Chelsea, for London, for all young person with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of representation at executive level.

As per a BFP 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from black heritage.

However, research from the equality organization found only 3.2% of board and senior leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching level, based on figures from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of ability present in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to continue to work hard to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent British managers presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining major leagues regarding national representation.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly motivating for young English coaches in the system to see someone land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be really well."

It is vital to remember – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a brief spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began writing articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence ability and said opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings of players from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the inclusion campaign and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the Premier League's pioneering black manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
